PDF files are, actually, a series of images (one per page) neatly packed into a single file. If you wish to extract those images, say, as JPG files, PDF to JPG offers you a simple and straightforward solution. Despite its name, JPG is not the only image file format supported, allowing you to transform your PDFs into TIFF, PNG, or PCX files, among others.
The program’s interface is in line with its simple and straight-to-the-point approach. If you need to convert one or many PDF files quickly and efficiently, all you have to do is create your own conversion list by adding as many PDFs as required to the program’s main panel. If you wish to convert all those files in their entirety, all you have to do next is click on the “Convert All” button and wait for the process to end.
Alternatively, you can select individual page ranges for each file. This flexibility, however, doesn’t apply to the output format selected. Instead of offering you the possibility of selected a format for every PDF document on the list or one of the formats supported for all of them, you’re forced to choose the latter. This minor change in the program’s design would certainly add a high value to its batch conversion capabilities.
There are other minor changes in the output that the program does allow you to make. You can choose a specific resolution value in pixels per inch, rotate the pages on the fly to the position of your choice, output the pages in either black and white or full color, and – and this is one of its main assets – combine the selected pages into one or more image files. Actually, you can choose to create one file per page, one file for all pages, or various output files each with a fixed number of pages.
The whole conversion process is fast and reliable, and normally produces excellent results, subject to the level of quality you selected, of course. The program’s tag price makes it suitable for any user, though I see PDF to JPG being used mainly for those who need to convert big numbers of PDF files into high-quality images on a more regular basis.
